NIC has a legislatively-mandated requirement to provide training,
technical assistance, and information to the field of corrections. As
part of its training mission, NIC uses an LMS, to allow participants
to enroll in NIC classroom events, Virtual Instructor Led Training,
launch E-courses (i.e. Web-Based Training or e-learning courses),
and access their historical transcripts and certificates. Additionally,
the LMS allows NIC to manage all aspects of classroom and online
learning including: enrollment management, certificate
management, creating and editing automated messages, creating
sub-learn centers, and generating reports.
The deployment of a customized LMS provides NIC with the
opportunity to reach a larger audience, reach a previously difficult
population to serve, and improve quality of the training experience
for correctional staff. Additionally, the use of an LMS to provide
online training and blended training solutions reduces the costs
associated with traveling to training, and minimizes staff coverage
issues.
NIC’s LMS is a unique legacy system, originally created in late 1999.
NIC through the years built out a custom LMS interface, training
service application and management services, and customer
service portals. NIC’s current contract is with Oracle America, Inc.
NIC’s local, state, and federal corrections customers apply,
manage, seek certificates, and access a multitude of training and
professional development services via NIC’s LMS. The NIC LMS
acquisition allows the Bureau to continue to provide learning
environment access to over 165,000 user accounts while
maintaining all learning activities (ILT, VILT, learning plans,
e-learning courses, etc.) offered by NIC in the learning center.
